To be honest, my take on what you're saying is that the single-focus power-beasts ruin the game for everyone else by making it so that you have to optimise stats or die. The game is richer for having people willing to go for unusal combinations and slow-burn growth.
In a similar vein, even with identical stats I will die faster in an encounter than Warren - OOC skill counts for as much as stats.
So...do what you want, and find ways to balance out stats choices through roleplay and improving OOC skills. Ignore the power-players and stats-optimisers and enjoy yourself. The 24hr isn't even representative of a normal game for the most part, so judging yourself on things in the ring is a bit pointless - by that standard the only successful character I've ever had is Harlequin.
